Hemorrhoid Surgery Miami, FL

Hemorrhoids occur when blood vessels become swollen inside the rectum (internal hemorrhoids) or outside the rectum (external hemorrhoids). Hemorrhoids may require surgical treatment when internal hemorrhoids drop through the rectum and bulge from the anus, called prolapse, or when external hemorrhoids develop blood clots that may be extremely painful. Prolapses can result in severe rectal bleeding.

The two main types of hemorrhoid surgery performed by board-certified general surgeon Dr. Enrique Whittwell are hemorrhoidectomy and hemorrhoidopexy.

Hemorrhoidectomy, where the surgeon cuts out the hemorrhoid, is recommended for prolapsed internal hemorrhoids or large external hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoidopexy is used to treat prolapsed hemorrhoids with a surgical staple, which puts the prolapsed hemorrhoid back into the rectum, cutting off the blood supply so that this tissue will shrink and be reabsorbed into the rectum.

With both types of surgery, you can usually return home the same day.

After the surgery, eating a high-fiber diet and making sure you consume lots of water can help to prevent hemorrhoids from coming back.
